Group of furniture by Hector Guimard
A bit of a story to gain knowledge:
Guimard was an architect and designer recognize as one of the pioneer of the Art nouveau movement. During his life, he got infused by the nature and its organic lines as well as the gothic volumes that surrounded him at the time.
Moreover, he mainly designed architecture and interiors, but whenever he created a space he was obliged to finish it with his own furniture. Why? Because the meaning of the space would not make sense, it would be like a poet without his paper. He wanted to achieve spaces that meant Art Nouveau, that screamed Hector Guimard.
What do I think about it?
According to his values, he created furniture, mainly chairs, that responded to the natural & organic curve.
As we can see on the pictures below and above, the chairs have few or no geometrical shapes. Besides, the chairs could be seen as ergonomics thanks to their organic curves that follow the shape of the human body. Moreover, their colors and the materials used could refer to the nature, such as brown and green or wood and leather. Therefore, Guimard achieved work pieces involving craftsmanship and nature which was revolutionary for the time. He created a style of work similar to a well known Spanish designer called Antoni Gaudi. Both were having the nature as an example and both created a revelation in the Art and Architecture's world at the same time.
