THE
ART NOUVEAU
The
term art nouveau first appeared in the 1880s in the Belgian journal ‘L’Art
Moderne’ to describe the work of Les Vingt, there were 20 painters and
sculptors seeking reform through art. The art nouveau is a movement that
flourished from the 1880s until the First World War. Western Europe and the
United States were in the midst of the development. It was inspired from the
aspects and elements of the natural world, it influenced architecture and art
especially in the graphic and illustration world.
The last major
exhibition of art nouveau was at the V&A, in 2000, it was one of the biggest
hits in the museum's history. And its now one of the best collections of it
anywhere, its shown in the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.
GRAPHICS AND
ILLUSTRATIONS
The graphics and
illustrations of this movement were the first mass produced style that became
such a big part of its history especially with their techniques used for both making
this art and printing it. Two-dimensional Art Nouveau pieces were painted, drawn,
and printed in popular forms such as
advertisements, posters, labels, and magazines. What I liked most about
these illustrations and graphics was that some designs flowed smoothly showing
how it is linked to our natural world. Even though they did not have the same
tools we do in order to create such precise and eye catching graphics and
works, we can still see such amazing imagination and creativity.
